Aquarium Substrate for Planted Tanks: Types & Uses
Aquarium substrate is the material that covers the bottom of your tank. In a planted aquarium, it does much more than decorate: it anchors plant roots, stores and supplies nutrients, can influence water chemistry, and shapes the layout of the whole aquascape. The main options are aquasoil, sand and gravel. Choose by the nutrients they provide and their effect on water chemistry, often described as active or inert.
